THIS ROLE

Supports the bury crew with general construction and field work related to underground fiber optic infrastructure. This position is designed for individuals seeking hands-on work experience in a construction environment. The Construction Laborer assists with physical labor, site preparation and restoration under direct supervision and in accordance with safety and operational protocols.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Construction Laborer your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assist with loading, transporting, and staging construction materials and tools.
  • Perform manual excavation tasks such as hand digging, potholing, and trench cleanup.
  • Support conduit and fiber optic cable placement and vault installations.
  • Restore disturbed areas through backfilling, grading, raking, and reseeding.
  • Guide equipment movements and assist with basic traffic control as directed.
  • Maintain safe and clean job sites throughout construction operations.
  • Follow safety procedures and utilize required PPE at all times.
  • Complete other construction-related duties as assigned by the Construction Specialist.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by start of employment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • No prior construction experience required; training will be provided.
  • Demonstrated interest in construction, utilities, or hands-on work preferred.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions and work cooperatively on a crew.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS OR EXPECTATIONS

You’ll excel greatly as a Construction Laborer if you possess the following:

  • Physical ability to perform strenuous manual labor for 10-hour shifts.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Capable of working in outdoor environments with exposure to variable weather.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness to learn and observe construction safety and operational procedures.
  • Basic familiarity with tools and equipment used in construction is helpful.
  • Opportunity to operate construction equipment based on knowledge, experience, and willingness to learn.
  • Driver’s license is required.
  • Position may be subject to seasonal layoff depending on winter conditions and projected workload, as permitted under WI law.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • This position reports directly to the Fiber Optic Construction Forman/Supervisor and works closely with the Construction Specialist and the Engineering Department.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to dust, mud, wind, rain, heat, and varying terrain. The role requires regular physical activity, including bending, kneeling, lifting, and climbing. Laborers may be exposed to moving equipment and roadside conditions and are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

Use of shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, flags, safety cones, and hand tools. Occasional use of compacting tools or small power equipment under supervision. Safety equipment including hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, vests, and work boots must be worn daily.

CUSTOMER SERVICE/INTERACTION

Occasional face-to-face interaction with property owners or the public in the course of job site activities. Laborers are expected to maintain a respectful, professional demeanor and refer any inquiries to crew leadership.

OTHER

  • Frequent travel by vehicle required.
  • Frequent overtime hours required.
